Top 3 Myths About Buying a Used Car

For many people, buying a used car makes more economic sense than buying a new one.  This is especially true when you consider the fact that the overall price of a used vehicle is usually considerably cheaper than the price tag that comes with a new car. Because of that, insurance and registration fees are usually less expensive as well.

However, there are many myths and misconceptions associated with buying a used car that make some people hesitant to go to a used car dealership. In order to reduce the confusion of buying a used car, we have debunked the top three most common misconceptions that people have about buying a used car.

1.) MYTH:  A new car will last longer than a used one.

Some people seem to think that when you buy a used car, you will only be able to enjoy it for a year, at most. While this may be true for some vehicles, this is certainly not the case for the majority of used cars that are for sale today. A used car that has been properly cared for and maintained can have the same life expectancy as a new vehicle. It is important to research the vehicle that you are interested in to find out what condition it was kept in with the previous owner. This why we offer a free CarProof report with each vehicle that we sell. We understand the importance of being properly informed about your next potential vehicle.

2.)  MYTH:  If you wait until the evening to go to the dealership, you will get a better deal.

This myth is based on the notion that if you show up at the dealership close to closing time, the salesman will offer you a ridiculously low price in order to get you out of there so he can go home early. There are a few reasons why this strategy will not work at most dealerships, and especially not at our dealership. First, many salespeople are no strangers to staying after normal business hours in order to finalize a deal. Secondly, at Zacks Auto Sales, our entire staff has the same goal: to get you the best vehicle for the best price; no matter what time you come to the dealership.

3.)  MYTH: You will get a better deal if you buy a used car from a private seller.

Sometimes, private sellers will have lower prices than a nearby dealership. However, that does not necessarily mean that the deal is better. For instance, if you were to buy a car from a newspaper add or an internet listing, you have no way of really knowing what condition the vehicle is in, or what kind of care the previous owner gave the vehicle. What may seem like a good deal at first, may cost you a lot more money in repairs in the long run.
